Network slowly - How To Meet People Without Trying - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career I hate networking events: theyre overly crowded, people always have an agenda (the need to meet a potential client), and its difficult to build a relationship with an individual. Instead of pursuing networking events, Ive decided to network slowly and utilize my current network to meet new people.  Heres three ways that I do it and how you can do it too: Email newsletter with close friends Instead of trying to meet random people at a networking event, I leverage my close personal friends to make the introductions for me.  I utilize MailChimp to email a list of about 100 friends who I greatly respect, and who are as highly motivated as me. Once a month, I send an email newsletter about what Ive learned, useful resources that Ive found online, and requests for  introductions  to interesting people. When I first moved to the Bay Area in Northern California, I emailed my list to make introductions for people I should meet in the area.  Upon moving to the Bay, I instantly had 7 lunch meeting with young professionals and entrepreneurs that Im still close friends with today. But I dont just focus on taking from my community; I also focused on giving back to my community.  A good friend of mine in Los Angeles, CA recently asked me to connect him to a hungry entrepreneur that is looking to lead a profitable project.  I again emailed my list to let them know that I have a great opportunity for a young entrepreneur.   One week after I sent the email, I connected my friend with an entrepreneur that is now leading the project and increasing profitability for my friends company. Network slowly: let your friends make the important introductions for you Personal blog My personal blog has worked wonders for me in terms of opening up doors for unique opportunities and making me introductions to successful entrepreneurs.  At the moment, I try to keep a steady schedule of new posts every Tuesday and Thursday.  Its tough to keep it consistent, so if you dont have time to write 2 posts a week, try to at least post once a week every Tuesday. Make it clear on your About and Contact page that youre looking to meet people and youll find emails from awesome people in your inbox. Network slowly: show value to people online and valuable people will reach out to you Join valuable organizations Personal Branding Blog is a great community that Ive decided to join by contributing blog posts once a week.  Dan Schawbel has done an amazing job, and Ive leveraged his success to find introductions to other successful entrepreneurs. I am also a part of the Young Entrepreneur Council.  The YEC has been extremely valuable in terms of making introductions to young go-getters that are making a difference.  Its very easy to meet people through the Facebook Group, and the content and community managers have been super helpful in getting my content published on A-list blogs around the web. I highly recommend that you apply to be a part of the YEC right now. Network slowly: allow community manager and chief editors to do their job and connect you with other important people in the community As an immediate next step, create a free MailChimp account and create an email list with 100 people that you follow on Twitter.  Send 1 email a month with valuable content and ask for introductions to people that they recommend you meet. This action alone will greatly open up the doors to a network of successful professionals. Sales vs. Recruiting The Eternal Battle

Sales vs. Recruiting The Eternal Battle I do not like confrontation. I do not feel that anything can be solved by yelling and accusations and mean  faces. I believe in discussions, dialogue and deal making. I know that negotiation will bring resolution  even if everyone walks away unsatisfied. In the 15 years I have been a head hunter, I have noticed that  the most common, and most inexplicable, is the WAR of Sales VS. Recruiting. This is the most incomprehensible conflict. You’ll find this battle to be more common in a “split shop”  where there are recruiters and sales people, and less common in full desk environments, but it is always there.  I say it is bizarre as both want the same goal: placements and commission. So, why and  where is the disconnect? Bottom line: sales doesn’t want to lose their clients by pushing too hard and  recruiters don’t want to waste their time on bullsh*t jobs. How can we fix it and make compromise? Whos to blame? Things are slow. Open jobs have been sitting for 8 weeks and more without fills. Submittals and  interviews have dropped off. Your manager will gather the whole team together (sales and recruiting) in  her office… Everyone is getting ready for her to start yelling Before it begins, Sales looks at Recruiting Recruiting looks at Sales, and they yell at the same time, fingers pointing: Its your fault I know we can come up with plenty more specific complaints but at the end of the day they boil down to  these two from each side: Sales: You haven’t given me enough candidates to send Your candidates STINK, they bomb, they don’t fit and my manager is getting their panties in a  terrible bunch Recruiters: Your job spec is weak, pulled from the client’s site, or is unreasonable I have sent you people, and there has been no response, or the response does not give enough  detail for me to refine my search How can we fix it? Each side needs to help the other, hand in hand: Just be honest and open Those are simple solutions with specific fixes. At the end of the day though, it boils down to honest and  open communication between sales and recruiting. It needs to be recognized by everyone involved. The  ultimate goal of a recruiter should be to have such a relationship with sales that no phone call to a candidate  is needed! That sales sends your resume without even looking at it. Sales’ goal is to have recruiters  with that level of trust, who know your connections and jobs are real and not black holes. If a sales person says to me: Jeff, I am trying to establish a relationship. Can you get me 3 people  to show Mrs. Manager so I can generate dialogue? I am more than happy to do it. However, if they  say: ERMEGEHERD this is so HOT I need people RIGHT NOW!!! and I find out they have never spoken to  the line manager let alone Human Resources? It destroys the trust level. On the other side, when I present a candidate to Sales, I give the information with warts and all: Oh, he  has 7 years doing [X Skill]… but that gap was 6 months in the clink for a DUI. Or more realistically: She is a  passive candidate and she is not closed… but she wants to see the environment and meet the manager. You should never sell your candidate to your sales manager. You will be found out. No candidate is ever  a perfect match. You need to explain why the manager needs to see them: I know the manager wanted  to see no gaps, but in 2002 he had a 3 month gap trying to find work. I checked the references and I feel  comfortable that this should not be a negative. An answer like that will help Sales take it to the next  level. Bottom line of what I am getting at here is that Sales and Recruiters need to work on working together.  They cannot lay blame at each other’s feet when the blame usually lies not in lack of work but in work  not fully completed. Our livelihoods are tied together and we shouldn’t be afraid to help each other do  our jobs, because in the end, we cannot be successful unless we are in symbiosis.

It is similar to the choices for internet search engines, find one that works for you and stick with it. (The number of users in your area/field is important) Here are ways to use LinkedIn, not an all inclusive list, but a teaser to get you started. Get in touch with past co-workers. It used to be so difficult to find out where your friends went. Ive found past co-workers who are doing some pretty cool things in other parts of the country. Its fun to re-connect. Learn about someones background before you meet with them. Information is power. Comment roundup on secret salaries vs. open - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog When I wrote my post on why secret salaries are a baaaaaad idea I didnt realize what I was getting myself into. On most other posts Ive written, 3 out of 4 commenters agree in this case 3 out 4 thought that open salaries are a really baaaaaaaad idea. How many as are there in baaaad anyway? Theres about 60 comments on the post itself, 50 on reddit, 80 on digg and more on other sites, most of which, as mentioned, are dead set against the idea of open salaries. Interestingly, the comments from people who have tried open salaries are overwhelmingly in favor of the idea many cite great benefits. I still think open salaries are a great idea for employees, businesses and the bottom line. Ive summed up the major arguments from the comments against secret salaries and my arguments against these arguments below, not so much because I want the last word (well, that too :o) but mostly because most of the arguments are really good arguments, many of which I hadnt thought about before. No one will adopt it / it cant be done The short counter-argument: Some companies have done it. In some cases its failed, in some cases its worked incredibly well. Employees would demand more, People wont demand a reasonable salary, employees overestimate their value Experiences from companies that have open salaries, including my own, dont support this. People are very reasonable about it and perfectly capable of realizing that some people get paid more than others. If Im good at bargaining and therefore get a higher salary, I deserve more because as a good bargainer Im valuable to the company Great! Then make bargaining skills one of the things that count in determining salaries. That way its out in the open and not something that counts in some cases and not in others. People will start complaining No, people are already complaining, because in many cases they already know whos making what. Making salaries open means managers will discover that people complain. Thats a good thing because it brings the complaints out into the open where they can be dealt with. Its impossible/difficult to set fair wages and difficult to define how salaries are set Well this is true whether salaries are open or secret. Making them open makes it easier to set fair salaries, because you know what other similare employees are getting. The company wants to pay as little as possible / Companies cant pay more As I wrote in the post, no company has an interest in paying as little as they can get away with. Companies have an interest in making salaries as fair as possible, not as low as possible. And because making salaries more fair can lead to people being happier at work and therefore to increased productivity and quality, its actually good for the bottom line. Your salary is not connected to your co-workers Thats actually true. But you perception of how fair your salary is is totally connected to your co-workers salaries. Employees hired during a drought What do you do if theres a sudden drought of qualified employees in the job market and you need to hire employees at signifcantly higher wages than existing similar employees? Embarassment if a persons salary drops Well thats true: If a persons salary drops it will be taken as an indication that that person is now less valuable to the company. But whats the alternative? Keep on paying that employee a salary thats now unfairly high, merely to avoid embarassing an employee? Thats doing everybody, including the employee, a disservice. The world is unfair Sometimes. Does this mean we shouldnt work towards making it more fair? Salary is a personal matter I have a lot of sympathy for this argument because in todays society salary is quite a taboo. Its not up there with sexual practices, but close. But why is that? Does it need to be? Difficult to explain why Johnson gets more, You have to explain/defend every raise, Results in a new line of bs from HR Is it really that difficult to explain why person A gets more than person B?
